Dental Care

Holistic Dentistry is Holistic dental care that looks at the whole body in care,  not just the mouth.  In this, the philosophy in the role of oral care is taken into consideration.  This dental practice is different from that of traditional dental care.  As children, we all loved to eat sweets not thinking about how it would affect us later in life. Sure enough, even with good oral hygiene, flossing and brushing twice a day cavities still develop.  This resulted in having the damaged teeth removed, or having the tooth filled.  There are different types of fillings that are used.  Porcelain gold or amalgam fillings, which consist of silver, mercury, and tin as well as copper and zinc.

Amalgam Fillings

Amalgam fillings, the traditional fillings used to fill cavities can be harmful to the person who wears them.  This can effect the air they breathe, the water they drink, and possibly affecting unborn babies according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency. These fillings release small amounts of mercury over time from just breathing, drinking hot or cold beverages.  It affects the CNS in such a way that it causes neurological issues in addition to psychological and immunological problems.  Mercury, when inhaled over a period of time can affect the nerves and also the lungs, liver and kidneys.  So What other Choices are there for fillings?

Composite Resin or White Fillings

Composite resin or white filling, is used as the number one choice to amalgam fillings. Resin fillings are plastic molds of the cavity that is strengthened with powered glass. They are remarkably safer than the amalgam fillings since they do not contain mercury.  The procedure protects the teeth and does not dig away at them to fit the amalgam filling. Additionally, white fillings last longer than amalgam fillings. They also blend in with the color of the tooth being filled, for a cleaner looking appearance.

Glass Ionomers

Glass ionomers are similar to composite resin, but also contain natural minerals and compounds, like eugenol or zinc and some acrylic resin. They are cemented together with glass filler that has fluoride in it, and releases in the tooth over time. This form of filling is better suited to be used in smaller filling procedures, and so far, is the only disadvantage to using this form of filling. The alternative restorative treatments are similar to the glass ionomers or composite resin.  They were designed to be used in smaller or developing countries where it would be easier to install.  Hand-held equipment was used to apply adhesive to fit the piece in the cavity comfortably.

Finding Holistic Dental Care

Amalgam fillings have been around for more than one hundred years and have been used by many.  It is important to note that there is some risk in mercury exposure that comes with using mercury fillings to fill cavities.  Considering the alternative will not only last longer, but will be a healthier choice of fillings  This choice will allow you to preserve your teeth for a broader, whiter smile.  To find a holistic dentist near you, visit the Holistic Dental Association for more information.
